1971 Maserati Indy 4700 America

The Maserati, during the 1960s and the 1970s, had internal difficulties. This may-be one of the reasons why the 1971 Maserati Indy 4700 didn’t really become a critical favorite-by critics and customers alike, although this doesn’t mean the car is not worthy of adulation-today. 

The 1971 Maserati Indy 4700 America was the specifically US-tailored model of the Maserati Indy. Just like the Maserati Indy of Europe, the 1971 Maserati Indy-4700 America, at first glance, was not particularly striking. 

After all, the Maserati Indy was created merely as a replacement for Maserati models-that were being ceased at that point. It wasn’t made in lieu of some great automobile-breakthrough or great sports car changes. Indeed, this kind of production actually made the Maserari-Indy and the US-specific 1971 Maserati Indy 4700 America not so popular. Many now call the Indy as the most-underrated Maserati ever, something that’s a whole lot to shallow considering the extensive-line of Maserati cars produced since its foundation.

The distinction may be unfair when you look at the history of Maserati; a look at-the company’s time line would reveal that the 1971 Maserati Indy 4700 America was built at a-time when the company was bound for change due to some internal issues (Maserati was plagued by-ownership issues before it became part of the Piat group). Still, the 1971 Maserati Indy 4700-America does have some great features. And while it’s not exactly what you’d call an-iconic classic car, it was nonetheless a great sports car and an luxurious and amazing classic car-in today’s standards. The 1971 Maserati Indy 4700 America can indeed command attention and-respect on the road today, thanks to its trademark 

In any case, the Maserati Indy was in honor of the Maserari cars that won in the-1939 and 1940 Indianapolis 500. It was first presented at the 196 Salone dell’automobile di-Torino. The prototype was made by a designer that already worked with Maserati—the acclaimed-coachbuilder Carrozzeria Alfredo Vignale (or simply Vignale). At the time of production, Maserati-was replacing models Mexico and Quattroporte, which was already old at the time. The result was a-car in between the size of the Ghibli and the Quatroporte, although everything else about the car-wasn’t very different from the other Maserati models.

In short, besides the size and the engine, its brakes, suspension, and steering were-as usual. The engine, of course, is different, because it is the first V8 engine to be used on a-Maserati car. The car itself was roomier, although it was visually similar to the-Ghibli. 

The Indy had a number of updates—and one of them is the 1971 Maserati Indy-4700 America, which wasn’t very different from the usual Maseratis except for some United-States-specific changes. Still, the constant updates were criticized, and the Indy line was short lived; it-didn’t even have any direct successors. This may be attributed to the internal situation of-the Indy, however. The Indy was directly succeeded by the Maserati Kyalami—which was even less-a favorite in the market despite the intentions of the new Maserati owner. Of course, this-doesn’t really change the fact that the 1971 Maserati Indy 4700 America would be one hell of a-ride today thanks to its history and beauty.
