Why Car Shows Love the 1971 Porsche 917 HK Coupe

Car shows love the Porsche 917 because it is easily one of the most important Porsche car models of all time. For one, it is the first Porsche that garnered overall wins at one of the most prestigious racing competitions in the world, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It is perhaps also the most iconic car in the Porsche production list. The 917 was also featured prominently in Le Mans, the film that starred Steve McQueen.

In any case, of all the 917s produced, it was the 1971 Porsche 917 HK, that proved-to be the most successful.

The story of the Porsche 917 HK is not a simple one. The 917 HK served as a partner-to the also successful 908/3. However, as if to create make a full circle, the 917 HK was actually-designed using the original 908 as a framework. The idea then was to create a lightweight car (like-the 909 Bergspyder) that was also powerful.

However, contrary to what people would think, the 917 did not start off well. During-the 1969 trial for the 917, it was revealed that, while fast, it wasn’t very stable. Many-believed the culprit was the car’s 4.5 liter engine, which they say might be inappropriate for-the car’s frame. Still, Porsche entered the car in the Nurburgring and the Le Mans-competitions for that year, only to lose miserably. Le Mans even saw the death of 917 driver John-Woolfe due to a crash.

With the help of John Wyer, a racing engineer from England, the company developed-what turned out to be a racing popular: the Porsche 917 HK.

With this new development, the 917 HK ceased its lightweight persona and embraced-power head on (in turn, it was the Porsche 908/3 that handled roads that fit lightweight cars-better). The 908/3 won the Nurburgring and the Targa Florio, races that had slow-roads.

The development, of course, worked. 1970 saw Porsche win the Le Mans thanks to the-Porsche 917 K. This victory paved the way for many 917 K versions. For instance, 1971 saw a Porsche-HK Coupe version, which was a chunkier version of the original 917 K design.

As for the 917 all in all, Porsche continued to develop other car models for car-line, but no other production matched the power and ability of the 917 K Coupe. Other versions-include the Porsche 917/20 (also known as the Pink Pig due to its hefty appearance), the 1971 917-LH, the Porsche 917/30 that was used in the Canadian-American Challenge Cup (a competition that ran from 1966 to 1974), among others.
