Porsche has a long history of racing success and one fine example of it is the1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR. It is one of the most beautiful and powerful examples of the 911 series and it helped to establish Porsche’s place in racing history.

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR was a car that was born for racing. The fact-of the matter is that the car was largely put into production so that Porsche could qualify for-racing. It had been stipulated that at least 500 production cars needed to be produced in-order for cars to race on certain circuits, and that is largely why this car was offered to the-public.

Like so much of what Porsche has done over the years, and they endeavoured to-improve on something that was already a success. The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR was a new-model, but it was built on the platform of the already successful six cylinder flat configuration-engine that had been used in the 911 S. Instead of starting from scratch the new engine, they-decided to bore out that one and increase the displacement to 2.7 liters.

With this increase in displacement, the car was now able to produce 210 horsepower-which was significant for the period. At this point Porsche did something that had never been-done before, and that was to put larger rear tires on the back of the car than there were on the-front of the car. To produce the1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR, the engine was bored out to 2.8-liters and surprisingly this was enough to add 100 horsepower to the car.

The 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR was truly a racing car, and it made its debut at-the 1973 Daytona 24 hours. It was not only an impressive win, but it changed the way that-sports cars were made in future years. The Carrera RSR was able to beat Ferraris and Corvettes-that had significantly more displacement.

The advantage that the Carrera RSR had was that the power to weight ratio was-better, delivering almost 310 horsepower for its relatively scant 1850 pounds of weight. The 0-to 60 miles per hour time was a flat 5 seconds, which was blistering but not only was able to rocket-forward in a straight line, but it can also manage the curves like few other cars, making it perfect-for races like the 1973 Daytona 24 hours.

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RSR was made as a race car, and everything from the name-to the thinner body panels and even the thinner glass meant that this was a car that was all about-speed and winning races. All one has to do is look at the car, and see the enormous rear-spoiler, wide back tires and bigger brakes to know that it was meant for the racetrack. It-continues to be one of the most sought after examples of the 911 series, and any model that has been-preserved will enough to be presented at auction will command an excellent price.
