Looking Back At the Historic 1964 Porsche 356

In the history of sports cars, few have as prestigious a position as the Porsche 356. The production of this car continued from 1948 until 1965, and the 1964 version represented the last styling that would come out of Porsche and remains a favorite among sports car enthusiasts. It offered style, performance and is known as one of the most enjoyable cars to drive from that era.

The Porsche 356 was a car that went through a number of different styles over the-years. The earliest version was one which Porsche calls its first automobile. That is-disputed by some people, but it seems that the real authority on the matter would be Porsche-itself. The incredible success of the 356 was what paved the way for the incredible history of-Porsche over the years.

The first Porsche 356 came out in 1948. It was largely based on a Volkswagen-platform, and it immediately had people taking notice. Orders started to flow in right away-for these cars based on the intelligent design and beautiful styling.

Through a number of iterations, the last version of the 356 began in 1964. It-was produced for just the last two years of the life of the car, and it was called the 356C. -It represented the culmination of many years of evolution in the line, and was the most impressive-of all of them.

One thing that the 356C had going for it was the most powerful engine that had been-offered in this car since its introduction. It produced 95 horsepower, and with its extremely-light weight and balanced stance, is handled beautifully and accelerated impressively. This-version that came out in 1964 was the one that was produced the most in all of the years that it-ran. There were over 14,000 of them built during that year.

Not only did the impressive functionality of the 1964 Porsche 356C gain attention,-but it would provide innovations for future Porsche cars. Starting in 1965, the 912 would use-the same engine that had been used in this last version of the 356. Although the new 911 was-an impressive machine, it remained out of reach for many consumers and the 912 was an automobile-that was intended to reach that larger audience that could not obtain a 911.

These cars are truly a collector's item, and would fetch an extremely high price at-auction if they remain in good condition. Incredibly, about half of the 356 models that were-produced remain on the road to day. That ratio would be even higher for those cars that were-produced later in the run like the 1964 356C. It is one that is particularly sought after by-collectors because it was the top of the line in the series of these cars. It has all of the-beauty and style that the original versions had, but it also benefited from many technological-innovations that were worked out over the almost 20 year run of this impressive-automobile.
