The Cheap (and Popular) Porsche 356!
Most of the time, when a car manufacturer tries to create a cheap version of a slightly successful car, the result is ....
The 1955 Porsche 356 1500 was actually made as an American product to compete with the Cadillac at the time. The Cadillac was considered as the dream sports car of many Americans and at around 3,300 dollars, it was cheaper than some of the better made sports cars from Europe. So Porsche decided to create a Porsche 356 without the frills in order to cut its price to 3,000 US dollars.
The end product was a practically basic sports car with admittedly ..crappy roof, as the Porsche Archives said. But this only made the car lighter, hence the Speedster tag on the 1955 Porsche 356 1500. And a lighter car means a faster car. This made the 1955 Porsche 356 1500 a favorite among motorsports enthusiasts and even among celebrities (such as known car enthusiast James Dean).
Obviously, Porsche is one of the companies that can make a very bare product into a commercial success.
