The first Porsche - No. 1
A stunning 1948 Porsche 356 No. 1 sits in the Porsche Museum and has the distinction of being known as the car ....
that started the Porsche legacy. Porsche considers this its first automobile. It was built on the platform of the Volkswagen Beetle with a few important differences; it has a tubular chassis that reduced its weight and it had a Beetle engine that was tuned from the 24 horsepower that came in the Beetle up to 35 horsepower. Not only was it well built but it was a beautiful automobile as well, with an aluminum body that is both light and distinctive looking.
This was truly the car that started it all; it is not only the first from Porsche but the proceeds of the sale of this car provided the funds that got Porsche started. It was originally built by Ferry Porsche, the son of Ferdinand Porsche. He wanted a car for himself that was worthy of the task, and this car soon proved itself. Only three weeks after being built, it won its first race at Innsbruck. The demand for these cars was immediate and this was the first shining example of what was to come from one of the most successful racing car manufacturers of all time.
