1964 AC Cobra MK II 289

AC Cars is one of the little known car manufacturers today. In fact, very few people-know that AC Cars still exist today. 

Although the current episodes in the history of AC Cars has been rather problematic-(with a number of problems during the latter part of the last decade), there are current attempts at-reviving the company and producing new AC Cars. The latest AC car is the AC Mk VI, a 2009 release in-Monaco. That many people are very interesting in reviving this company should be enough proof that-AC Cars is indeed worth the trouble. After all, for an independent car company, it has produced a-number of amazing, little known gems. Although not exactly the best sports cars in the industry (in-fact, others have outclassed these AC Cars), they are amazing in their own special-way—especially for car enthusiasts.

One of these amazing little known treasures is the 1964 AC Cobra 289 MK-ll. 

Admittedly, the 1964 AC Cobra 289 MK II was not exactly the financial success the-company hoped it would be. Still, this car is an icon because it was conceived by one of the-greatest minds in the industry: Carroll Shelby. Shelby, a car designer and a renowned race car-driver, had the idea of using a Ford V8 engine on one of the AC’s chassis for one of their-older cars, the Ace. According to sources, the search for this particular engine was long and-difficult. It was in 1962 that the AC engineers tested and fitted the engine on the chassis. This-produced the AC Cobra line of Cars. The Americans, however, called it the Shelby-Cobra. 

The AC Cobra, or the 1964 AC Cobra 289 MK II in particular, had very few changes vis-a vis the Ace, although the modifications did make the AC Cobra a more powerful car. For instance,-the 1964 AC Cobra 289 MK II had its steering box modified for the wider V8 motor. The 289 V-engine (hence the name of the car) is also one of the major changes. The 1964 AC Cobra 289 MK II did achieve minimal race track success, and many other-racers did use the 1964 AC Cobra 289 MK II I the race tracks successfully. Still, the car was no-financial success. With only around 500 units built, it was not enough to make AC Cars a powerhouse-car manufacturer. Also, in terms of power, the Ferraris regularly outclassed and out-powered this AC Cars creation. There have been other AC Cobras after this one, although its design-and its legacy proved to make the 1964 AC Cobra 289 MK II more important than all the other AC-Cobras ever made.
