1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing

The Mercedes Benz 300 SL was released alongside the less powerful and the much-cheaper 190 SL. And while many praised the 190 SL for its very detailed designs, the Mercedes Benz-300 SL actually was quite innovative for its time, as it included many firsts in its-designs. 

While the 190 SL is known for its design, the Mercedes Benz 300 SL is known for its-engineering, something one should expect from a big car made by a major car-manufacturer. 

The Mercedes Benz 300 SL was among the company’s releases after the Second-World War. This was a very crucial time for car manufacturers, as this was a time when the market-was actually very large, and the industry very rich. Car enthusiasts would notice that many iconic-classic cars, the ones that can still command high prices and attention, were developed during this-time. In any case, the Mercedes Benz 300 SL’s name was derived from the model’s three-liter engine cylinder displacement, while SL meant Sport Light (or Sport Leicht in its German-original). Introduced in the 1954 New York Auto Show in America, it was an instant hit—for its-many distinctive features.

For instance, it is the first to have gull wing doors, a classic car feature that-remains to be quite iconic even until today. The 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL had the gull wing door,-although models after 1957 no longer had it. Also, the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL was the first-gasoline powered car ever to allow fuel injection.  

Besides the marvelous groundbreaking engineering of the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL,-it was also known for its spaciousness. It wasn’t as bulky or as big as other sports cars that-were produced decades later, but it wasn’t also the sexy and curvaceous cars other-manufacturers created (Jaguar’s XK series made this the trend). Well equipped and amazingly-designed (it has this gothic, classic feel that commanded attention before, and can still command-attention today). 

However, it did have some downsides—and its price is chief among them. The-later models were cheaper due to the exclusion of the gull wing doors, so this is why the 1955-Mercedes Benz 300 SL is coveted. The gull wing doors, after all, can be considered as its most-iconic trademark. Because the gull wing door model was soon phased out, there are very few available-today, making it rather elusive and exclusive.

Because of all these, the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL is considered to be among the-most important models Mercedes Benz has ever developed, even if you compare it with the more-accessible 190 SL Mercedes Benz. It is also often ranked as among the best sports cars ever, and it-still commands a high price in the market today. Needless to say, the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL can-be called timeless. Even if it is a classic car, its features can compete with the more modern cars-of today. It may be safe to say that the 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL is the type of car many tried and-will try to emulate, even as the years go by.
